Kissakeko

The room

Alex Bernardo brings his interests in jazz and sake together at Kissakeko on Mason Street in Nob Hill. The compact San Francisco room draws on the Japanese jazz-kissa tradition, with a personal record collection and artisanal sake giving the visit its character.

An eight-seat counter and suspended Listude loudspeakers make the relationship between the listener and the system unusually close. Vintage amplification and analogue playback add another layer of interest for visitors drawn to the equipment as well as the jazz.

Suspended 14-faced Listude loudspeakers form the installation’s most distinctive element. Built in Hokuto, Japan, their geometric enclosures hang above the counter; the exact model and any custom specification are unconfirmed.

Dynakit Mark III amplification and a McIntosh MX110 valve preamplifier accompany a Clearaudio Concept Wood turntable with a Sumiko Blue Point No. 3 High cartridge. A vintage Meridian CD player adds a digital physical-media source, though its model is unspecified. The combination brings valve electronics, vinyl and CD playback into the same compact listening space.
