Acoustics / install / USA

Steven Durr Designs

Steven Durr Designs works on acoustics and audio-system design. Its contribution here connects a custom loudspeaker installation with the surrounding venue.

Design & approach

Steven Durr Designs describes an approach that translates between the technical requirements of architects and builders and the musical language of clients. The practice treats sound as part of the intended emotional experience of a room. Its studio-design film provides a directly attributed discussion of that work.

Design / integration

Steven Durr Designs contributed acoustics and system design at 888, working alongside Soundlux Audio and OJAS.

Inside the system

OJAS / Devon Turnbull’s horn-loaded, Altec-inspired loudspeakers are integrated into the room through a collaboration with Steven Durr Designs and Soundlux Audio. Multiple amplifiers occupy the wall installation, while Technics SL-1200-family decks provide the vinyl source. Exact amplifier models and deck generations are unspecified. System design and acoustic work are linked to the wood-panelled interior developed with Commune Design. The installation is architectural in scope: loudspeakers, electronics and the room were considered together.
