A city through its listening rooms / Colombia

Listening in
Cali.

A city of collectors, formidable musicians and neighborhood bars: rare Latin records by day, Bonsai and Tropicalia after dark.

4 Atlas venues2 documented systems3 places to stay

In Cali, knowing the record is part of knowing the city. Salsa has an audience of dancers, certainly, but also collectors who follow orchestras, singers and different versions of the same song. That depth of interest makes an afternoon with a record seller worthwhile even if you leave without buying anything. Ask about a Colombian pressing, a local orchestra or the record playing in the shop; the conversation can take you well beyond the familiar salsa catalogue.

Bonsai HiFi and Tropicalia belong to the neighborhood life of San Antonio. On the same stretch of Calle 2, they offer two good reasons to spend an evening close to the music: Bonsai’s compact bar, with the decks within reach, and Tropicalia’s open-air patio. Brazilian records, soul, disco, reggae and house sit alongside Latin selections. Come with an interest in what is playing and in the people playing it. The sound systems matter, but so does the possibility of meeting someone who knows a record you have been trying to find.

Give the city more than one kind of musical evening. Macanudo makes space for a seated, jazz-kissa-style visit; Bengala & Bandolero connects the bar to a local world of DJs and producers. Punto Baré puts working musicians in front of you. Then spend a separate afternoon in Barrio Obrero, with Cali Vynil, Melassa and the Museo de la Salsa. The records, photographs and live performances tell different parts of the same story.

A few listening notes.

Calle 2, at neighborhood scale

Bonsai at #10–30 and Tropicalia at #10–33 make an unusually easy pair. Bonsai’s small room puts the selector and the equipment close to the bar; Tropicalia gives the evening more outdoor space. Both suit people who want to hear a set, talk about records and return the next night. Pick the programme that interests you and allow time to stay.

Dig for a story as well as a pressing

Leave time for the record sellers in El Centro. Rare Latin pressings are part of the attraction, but age alone tells you little about condition or value. Ask to hear a copy, compare the disc and sleeve, and let the seller know which orchestras you collect. Cali Vynil and Melassa in Barrio Obrero offer a more social continuation: record buying can become an afternoon of shared listening.

Hear the people making the music

At Punto Baré, choose a live bill and spend time with the musicians’ names; El Colectivo’s teaching and performance activity is another way into the city’s musical life. Bengala & Bandolero’s connections to Disco Bandoleros, Amenaza and Ecstasy 2000 open a different route into local production. Macanudo, with its lounge seating and Klipschorns, gives those busy nights a slower counterpart.

Macanudo

In Cali, Macanudo brings the Japanese jazz-kissa idea into a room of records, good food and signature cocktails. Subdued lighting and lounge seating give vinyl a place at the centre of the evening, with Klipschorn loudspeakers making the sound system as much a part of the room as the bar.

Record shops.

Record shop / Barrio Obrero

Melassa

Julián Salsa’s record shop doubles as a meeting place for collectors and a venue for live salsa. That combination is the reason to come: spend time with the vinyl, then see whether a listening gathering or concert coincides with your visit. Together with nearby Cali Vynil and the Museo de la Salsa, it makes Barrio Obrero worth an afternoon of its own.

An online option for the records you do not find while digging. Café Vinilo sources in Canada and sends new and used records through Cali; its team says used copies are cleaned and played through before sale. Browse the catalogue for imports and compare editions. Order ahead if you are traveling: this is an online seller, with no walk-in shop advertised.
