A city through its listening rooms / Germany

Listening in
Berlin.

Dance records in the afternoon, whole album sides in the evening, and a chance to hear how electronic music is made.

13 Atlas venues5 documented systems2 places to stay

Berlin’s record shops help explain a night’s music before the night begins. Hard Wax’s catalogue follows connections between techno, house, dub and bass; Sound Metaphors makes room for disco, synth-pop and less obvious dance records. OYE’s staff selections offer another set of ears. Spend time with the labels and the records around the one you came for.

The listening bars make a different use of a record. Bar Neiro plays LPs from beginning to end in a seated room; at Rhinoçéros, a single turntable carries full sides from the owners’ jazz, blues, soul and funk collection. A ballad or a long instrumental gets the same space as the better-known track. Stay for the side and hear how the record holds together.

Other rooms give that attention a different setting: Gong Fu Cha at Tea & Vinyl, natural wine at Unkompress, a café and restaurant by the river at Anima. Build in one encounter with music being made, too. SchneidersLaden’s showroom and beginner workshops introduce the workings of electronic instruments; KM28’s concerts take you into contemporary composition, improvisation and electroacoustic performance.

A few listening notes.

Let the side finish

Bar Neiro and Rhinoçéros make the album, rather than the individual track, the unit of listening. That is worth planning for: arriving midway through a side and staying for the next one can be more rewarding than rushing between rooms. Neiro’s limited-capacity, seated format differs from Rhinoçéros’s personal collection and single-turntable approach.

Follow a label back to its source

Hard Wax’s Basic Channel, Detroit and reggae/dub categories suggest connections that a simple “techno shop” label misses. Sound Metaphors carries releases on its own labels; OYE publishes staff charts. Listen to a few selections online, then take one specific question to the counter. Ask what sits beside the record you already know.

Tea, wine and time by the river

Tea & Vinyl gives tea preparation as much attention as the record, with separate bookings for guided ceremonies and some events. Unkompress puts a glass of natural wine beside its vinyl collection. Anima extends the listening-bar idea through coffee, meals and a riverside setting; its recorded mixes are a good introduction to the selectors’ range.

5 places to follow the records

Record shops.

Record shop / Kreuzberg

Sound Metaphors

Disco, dub, synth-pop and ambient music complicate the house-and-techno picture at Sound Metaphors. Used records sit alongside new releases and the shop’s own labels; books range from rave photography to synthesizers. It suits a Kreuzberg afternoon with Bikini Waxx, particularly if your taste moves between dance records and music you would rather hear sitting down.

Hard Wax

Hard Wax’s catalogue is a map of relationships: Basic Channel beside reggae and dub, Detroit beside house and techno, with bass music and more oblique electronics in the mix. Use its short descriptions and audio clips to build a listening list before going. The shop is now on Köpenicker Straße in the Kraftwerk building; older guides may still send you to Kreuzberg.

OYE Records

OYE’s staff charts are an easy way into its selection: house, disco and techno sit alongside records that wander beyond the club. The shops also make sense geographically. Oderberger Straße can lead into an evening at Rhinoçéros; Friedelstraße suits a Kreuzberg and Neukölln record day. Give the staff a track you like and see which label or release they suggest next.

Bikini Waxx Records

Ring the bell and head into the courtyard for new and secondhand records at Bikini Waxx. The shop’s distribution activity and dance-music focus give it a different selection to nearby Sound Metaphors. Much of the stock is kept for in-person browsing, so the online selection is only a starting point. Leave time to work through the used records.

Record shop / Friedrichshain

HHV Store

HHV’s hip-hop origins give you a way into its wider selection: trace a sampled beat back to a soul, jazz, reggae or Brazilian record. The Friedrichshain shop carries a selection from the much larger online catalogue, alongside clothing. Combine it with Tea & Vinyl in the same district, and check ahead if there is one particular release you want to collect.
