A sound with its own identity
Founded in Kingston in 1972 by Winston “Wee Pow” Powell, Stone Love built a reputation around exclusive dubplates, distinctive selectors and sound quality. Its history joins the musical identity of a crew to the practical work of transporting, assembling and maintaining a system.
Behind the speaker stacks
In a 2010 interview with The Gleaner, engineer Winston Samuels describes his route from moving speaker boxes and cables to taking responsibility for the rig. The article records two equipment sets, allowing Stone Love to work in more than one place. His account brings the daily work into focus: setting up correctly, keeping equipment clean and repairing faults on the road.
What the interview leaves open
Samuels is deliberately guarded about the details behind the system’s sound. That makes this a portrait of engineering practice, rather than a recipe to copy.
