Owner review / Home DJ station
The GR-Research NX-Studio monitors are stunning. What stands out most to me is their incredible holographic sound: a sense of space and resolution that makes listening feel immersive. I originally got them for our house in Colombia, where we installed the pair I built as monitors at the DJ station, and they have been a great fit for our Soul Sunday pool parties.
Open on top, sealed below
The NX-Studio combines a Neo 3 tweeter in an open-baffle arrangement with an M165NQ woofer in a sealed enclosure. GR-Research describes this hybrid approach as more accommodating of placement near a wall than many other designs. It keeps the open high-frequency presentation without requiring a fully open-baffle bass section. GR-Research’s design details ↗
For me, that combination delivers the quality that makes these speakers special: holographic sound with incredible resolution. At our DJ station, it is exactly the kind of presentation I want to hear. I would also put them on the shortlist for music producers who value that level of detail; my experience with this pair is as home DJ monitors.
Plan for subwoofers
These are not speakers I would choose for deep bass on their own. They need subwoofer support if you want the bottom end to match what is happening above it. GR-Research lists a frequency range of 70 Hz–20 kHz, which gives useful context for that limitation. Pairing them with subs is part of the plan, particularly for DJ use.
Build them—or buy them finished
I built our pair myself and did not find the project too difficult. That said, if you do not have solid carpentry skills, I would order the flat pack rather than build the cabinets from scratch. I would also watch crossover-building tutorials before starting the electronics. The cabinet work and crossover assembly are different parts of the job, and a flat pack only takes care of the first.
GR-Research offers the kit and links to flat-pack information, finished cabinets and a finished pair on its product page. Check the current options and compatibility notes before ordering. Explore the NX-Studio options ↗
From Colombia to San Francisco
I liked the pair in Colombia so much that I got another pair for my place in San Francisco. Buying them a second time says a lot about how much I enjoy these monitors.

Living with the NX-Studio
For our house, these monitors have been a wonderful addition. They bring the resolution and holographic presentation I was looking for to the DJ station, and they work beautifully for our Soul Sunday gatherings. If that is what you want from a monitor—and you are prepared to add subs—the NX-Studio deserves serious consideration.
