Bass Odyssey: country roots, international reach

A Jamaican sound-system story rooted beyond Kingston, with reinvention at the centre of its longevity.

A different starting point

Bass Odyssey began in 1989 in Alexandria, St. Ann, under founder Keith Walford. Its rural base is central to the story: Jamaican sound-system culture extends well beyond the capital, with local audiences and events sustaining crews that also build an international following.

Staying inventive

Reporting on the sound’s recognition by JaRIA in 2014, the Jamaica Observer interviewed manager and selector Keith “Keithy” Walford Jnr. He credited continued creativity and changes in playing style for its longevity. He also pointed to the work taking place outside Kingston that received less attention, even while the sound remained busy.

Listen for the selection

Bass Odyssey’s clash history is a useful starting point for exploring its recordings. Our listening suggestion is to follow the sequence: how a selector introduces a tune, responds to the audience and builds momentum. That is a different kind of system knowledge from a component list.
